I'm going to keep this short and sweet folks.
We all know the challenges that have faced the Canadian cattleman / cattlewoman over the last few years and the fact that those who have survived and continue to survive are those who have let our cows work for us rather than the other way around. Purebred breeders are no exception. Our switch to more carry over grass and bale grazing techniques have lowered our inputs in our cow herd. Calving later in the spring, weaning later in the fall / winter, along with basic background hay rations for our calves have reduced our inputs in our yearling stock. We continued along this year by grazing our yearling bulls until the first of November and then allowing them only good quality hay and carry over grazing for their winter ration. Not only did this cut our expenses, but it allowed us the opportunity to genetically identify animals that perform under these challenging conditions.
When looking for your new herd bull this year, don't forget to compare apples to apples. Our coming two year old bulls will not only settle your cows with their athletic physiques, but will allow you progeny that will keep the costs down on your own operation. We believe that if cattle can perform on forage, they can perform on any ration in a financially sound way. We aim to raise 1900 to 2200 pound mature bulls that will build you replacement females to be proud of and finished market ready cattle at 12 to 1400 pounds with tender and superior grading carcasses.
These markets will turn, and we will be ready when they do.
Our Bull Sale will be held on Feb. 21, 2009 at Ponoka. Details to follow.
Have a look at our "Beef for Sale" page to learn more about how our program is not only directed at a sustainable ranch, but a profitable value chain as well. Three "Second to None" meat shops open in Calgary now with plans for more in the future, as well as expanded wholesale beef sales including an exciting new deal with the Calgary Stampede.
All the best for now and we look forward to hearing from you for all of you seed stock needs.
